Coverage Gap Formula
How is an insurance coverage gap calculated?
For a simple limit-based requirement, subtract the available limit from the required minimum. If the result is greater than zero, that amount is the coverage gap.
Formula
Required Limit − Available Limit = Coverage Gap
Example: $2,000,000 − $1,500,000 = $500,000 gap
A limit comparison is only one part of reviewing vendor insurance. Policy types, dates, endorsements, licenses, and other organization-defined requirements can also matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Coverage gap calculator FAQ.
What is a coverage gap calculator?+
A coverage gap calculator compares a required insurance limit with the available limit you enter and calculates any shortfall between them.
How do you calculate an insurance coverage gap?+
For a limit-based requirement, subtract the available limit from the required minimum. If the requirement is $2,000,000 and the available limit is $1,500,000, the coverage gap is $500,000.
Can a current COI still have a coverage gap?+
Yes. A Certificate of Insurance can show a policy period that has not reached its listed expiration date while the available insurance limit is still below the organization's required minimum.
Does this calculator verify insurance coverage?+
No. The calculator performs simple arithmetic using only the amounts you enter. It does not verify a policy, confirm that coverage is in force, or determine legal or contractual compliance.
